Prehistoric fish, such as the armored placoderms, dominated the oceans by perfecting gill-based respiration and streamlined hydrodynamics. Their primary strength lay in extreme specialization for high-pressure aquatic environments. However, this specialization acted as a ceiling; their physiological dependence on water meant they were entirely vulnerable to receding shorelines or oxygen-depleted ponds during climatic shifts.
Early reptiles traded aquatic mastery for the ability to conquer land. By developing amniotic eggs and scaly skins to prevent desiccation, they broke the tether to the water's edge. While this allowed them to colonize vast inland territories, it introduced new vulnerabilities, such as the need for external heat sources to regulate body temperature and higher energy costs for movement.
